Physical Science students put their engineering and problem-solving skills to the test during a hands-on investigation involving density, buoyancy, and pennies. Students designed and tested small boats, then calculated and observed how many pennies their vessels could hold before sinking. As weight was gradually added, students were able to see firsthand how mass, density, displacement, and buoyancy affect whether an object remains afloat. The activity challenged students to make predictions, collect observations, and connect scientific principles with a practical experiment—turning the classroom into a laboratory for discovery.
