Collards Thrive at Ramsey Street High School Thanks to Staff and Students
At Ramsey Street High School, learning extends beyond the classroom and into the soil.
Along the wall between Corridor C and Corridor A, a row of healthy collard greens is
growing strong, thanks to the dedication of RSHS staff member Shirley Whitley and her
Edgenuity students.
Whitley, who has a passion for gardening, saw an opportunity to use an unused strip of land
as a teaching tool. With her guidance, students planted collards in the soil, learning
firsthand the value of care, patience, and responsibility. For many, this project represents
more than just gardening—it’s a lesson in life.
“Planting seeds in good soil shows students that with effort and nurturing, growth always
follows,” Whitley explained. The collard project not only freshens minds but also allows
students to see the tangible results of their work, reminding them that they too can help life
flourish when they invest time and attention.
The collard garden stands as a simple but powerful example of how creativity and care can
turn unused space into a place of growth, learning, and pride for the RSHS community.
